Deep cleaning vs regular house cleaning: which service does your home need?

Quick answer

Regular cleaning keeps a home tidy from day to day: sweeping, mopping, dusting and washing up. Deep cleaning is an occasional, top-to-bottom job that removes what daily cleaning cannot, such as kitchen grease, hard-water marks, dust on fans and grills, and dull, grimy floors. Most homes need regular cleaning every day or week, and a deep clean once or twice a year.

People often ask us whether they "really" need a deep clean or whether their house help can handle it. The honest answer is that the two do different jobs, and a well-kept home needs both. We only offer deep cleaning, so we have no reason to push it when a regular clean would do. Here is how to tell which one fits.

What regular cleaning cannot fix

Daily sweeping and mopping does an important job, but some dirt builds up so slowly that you stop noticing it, and it does not come off with a mop and a cloth:

Eight signs your home needs a deep clean

  1. Kitchen cabinet doors feel sticky when you open them
  2. The tiles behind the stove have turned yellow or brown
  3. Taps and shower heads have white crust around the base
  4. Fan blades leave a grey line on your finger
  5. Floors look dull even right after mopping
  6. Window tracks and grills are black with dust
  7. You are moving into or out of a home
  8. Painters, carpenters or other workers have just finished

If three or more of these sound familiar, a regular clean will not get the home back to where you want it.

When regular cleaning is enough

If the home was deep cleaned within the last six months, you cook lightly, and your house help keeps up with floors, dusting and bathrooms each week, you probably do not need a full deep clean yet. In that case a single room, often the kitchen or the bathrooms, may be all that needs attention. Our kitchen and bathroom price guide explains when booking separate rooms costs less.

From our team: the best results come from using both. After a deep clean, the weekly cleaning becomes much quicker and easier, because the house help is maintaining clean surfaces instead of fighting old grease and scale. That is also why the second deep clean, a year later, is usually faster than the first.
